2015 SERIES
ARTIST STATEMENT
My 2015 Series offers reflections of the last days of empire, connecting contemporary issues to my works. I hand draw costume jewelry I find in Koreatown with colored pencils, with faint reflections of New York life in the foreground. In these juxtapositions, I see the aspiration of a struggling middle class to luxuries beyond their means. I choose costume jewelry as my subject because it expresses our culture’s desire for more than it needs or can afford. The pieces I reproduce are intentionally garish, the stones and pearls obviously fake—a child’s vision of pirate’s treasure.
I try to call into question the status of my works as art objects by constantly effacing the appearance of my own technique.
